The 2014 QuickBooks Pro with Enhanced payroll is not a major upgrade from 2013. There are 3 main feature additions:



1) Enhanced email templates that are more customizable with client information and multiple attachments for QuickBooks generated emails.

2) Income tracker which makes it easier to track business income and overdue invoices.

3) Tracking bounced checks and more pre-defined one-click shortcuts for common tasks.



All three of these are nice. In my consulting business the Income Tracker is most immediately helpful. I expect the email customization enhancements will get me using direct QuickBooks email for my invoicing.



The included enhanced payroll is for just one employee!! I was expecting it to be for 3 which is how it was whne I got the version several years ago. This is a disappointment and an example of hidden inflation: the same package with less product for the same money. Unless you are a one person business, expect to spend more for more employees' payroll!



The enhanced payroll service is very nice. It will electronically submit federal forms for you. This is time and postage saver and is very easy. The payroll service includes updates when rules change for state or federal regulations. These updates include rule changes for how the program processes payroll and very clear explanations and directions for the person handling payroll if any manual action is needed. If you want to keep payroll in-house Quickbooks Payroll is a good option.



The payroll subscription required a call to Quickbooks Payroll support as I had a 3 employee subscription and the value of the included 1 person enhanced payoll was added into my existing subscription in a way that pretty much ended up extending my 3 person payroll subscription for 4 months. This exceptional case took about 30m to get straightened out on the phone including wait time.



The program installed without issues on Windows 7 Pro 64bit. The biggest issue is remembering my intuit login. It is required for registration. One of the first tasks after installation should be updating QuickBooks. Updating can take several minutes. It's only November 2013 and we are already up to the R3 update! I like that QuickBooks aggressively updates the product to keep it up to date.



If you are a user of 2013 expect pretty much an evolution of the program with a few new features to make life a little simpler for the small business accounting. If you are upgrading from Quickbooks 2010 or 2011, then a lot more has changed and it may take a little time to get used to the interface changes and explore new features.



It has been installed for about a week. I'll update this review as I live with it and make more use of the new features.



Update: Feb 5, 2014

I've been using QuickBooks Pro and Enhanced Payroll for more than 2 Months now. I've also upgraded Quickbooks Pro (without the enhanced payroll) for a client. It's working great for both of us and I've had no problems accessing my data file across the office network from multiple computers (but not concurrently - it's a one concurrent user license).



Since installation I have gotten back into my work "rhythm" and QuickBooks Pro 2014 is integrated into my business process flow. Just like the 2013 version was before. As such I'm now more focused on my business financials than on QuickBooks' various bells and whistles. This is as it should be.



I'm keeping my rating at 5 stars because QuickBooks is part of the overall "fabric" of my business letting me focus on the business of my business instead of fiddling with the technology that supports it.
